Every community deserves to be seen, understood, and supported. When people have access to the right information, and the power to act on it, they can shape the future of their own communities. That is the power of information put into action. 

While Northern Virginia is often regarded as one of the wealthiest regions in the United States, a closer look reveals that not everyone in the region has the same opportunity to thrive. Life expectancy in our region can vary by as much as 19 years depending on where you live. Access to care, economic opportunity, and stable housing are not evenly distributed. And the communities bearing the heaviest burdens are often least visible in the data that shape local policy and investment decisions.

That is the gap the Northern Virginia Health Foundation aims to close. For more than two decades, NVHF has worked as a steward of data for the region, collecting, publishing, and putting neighborhood-level data in the hands of the people and organizations best positioned to act on it. NVHF calls this its Knowledge for Impact work, the second of four pillars that guides what it does.

Why Leveraging Data Matters
Northern Virginia's communities are rich with knowledge. Residents, nonprofit leaders, and frontline workers understand the realities of their neighborhoods in ways that no academic report can fully capture. NVHF's role is to complement that on-the-ground wisdom with rigorous, disaggregated data, and to make sure that data reach the people who need it most.

As one of the region’s few sources of disaggregated health disparities data, NVHF has taken intentional steps to share the information it has openly and broadly. Our mission is for communities to find common solutions and, in turn, respond to community issues more effectively with more informed decisions. 

Since 2011, NVHF has commissioned and produced publicly available resources highlighting stark inequities in our region focused on health disparities, life expectancy, and the historical factors that play a role in those inequities. These have helped provide local leaders with the statistics and policy recommendations needed to advocate for change. 

For example, our report on the oral health of Northern Virginia exposed an alarming gap of dental coverage in the region and helped highlight the barriers preventing adults with low incomes from receiving dental coverage. The findings also helped local leaders and organizations advocate for improvements, which led to the creation of a comprehensive adult dental benefit. 

Strengthening Accountability Through Data-Informed Decisions
Data are only as powerful as what they make possible. NVHF's approach to data is grounded in the belief that information should be accessible to everyone and lead to action. Moreover, sharing what NVHF knows should make it easier for communities to advocate for what they need and for organizations to use their resources more effectively—and it should create opportunities for collaboration and collective action. 

Inspiring Collaboration Across Northern Virginia

Their proximity to communities across Northern Virginia brings critical perspective on what residents are experiencing, and together, we can identify opportunities to elevate community voices and drive greater impact,” said Courtney Rice, NVHF President and CEO.

That partnership shows up in concrete ways across the region. NVHF's neighborhood-level data has helped Fairfax County make the case for prioritizing housing as a health issue, recognizing that where people live is inseparable from how healthy they are. In Arlington, the Foundation's data informed the development of Destination 2027, the county's strategic plan for addressing health equity. These are important commitments to action, shaped in part by a clearer picture of what communities have identified as their needs.

NVHF’s grantee partners and other mission-aligned groups are already well aware of the issues impacting their communities; our data only reaffirm what they see on the ground. NVHF works side-by-side with partners to help them create more efficient solutions to address those issues.

Stronger Together
We recognize that it takes all of us and that no single group can fix the inequities in our region. A future where our communities are more connected, resilient, and healthier is dependent on partnerships across organizations. Collaborations that prioritize data-informed decisions create a strong foundation built on transparency and trust that is needed to tackle the systemic inequities that prevent every community from thriving.

Knowledge has the greatest impact when it leads to action. Our Knowledge for Impact pillar is a reminder of NVHF’s continued commitment to making sure every community in the region is seen, understood, and equipped with what it needs to help shape a healthier, stronger Northern Virginia.
