The Northern Virginia Health Foundation is committed to making a meaningful difference to those most in need, not only through grantmaking, but through our “beyond grantmaking” activities. These include working with organizations on common goals and partnering with other funders, government agencies, and community stakeholders to share ideas and better leverage our resources toward improving the health and health care of Northern Virginia residents. Examples of this work can be found in our community-based partnerships across the region.
The Foundation also works to bring attention to the health needs of Northern Virginia by commissioning research, including a first-ever report on the region’s oral health released in the fall of 2011. In 2013, we published a health indicators report, which found that while many are doing well, significant numbers of Northern Virginia residents—of all ages and incomes—struggle, particularly when it comes to obesity, dental care, mental health, and other health measures. This report was released at the first Northern Virginia Health Summit sponsored by NVHF where community leaders brainstormed ways to work “across silos” toward solutions to our region’s pressing health problems.
